TBCBSP General Meeting                                                                                                   May 3, 2014

 

Joyce called the meeting to order at 12:51at Dutch Way Restaurant in Gap, PA for the 55th Anniversary Dinner of the TBCBSP.

 

Joyce thanked Judy Kuether, Special Events Coordinator, for the arrangements for the dinner and everyone who helped make the event a success. 

 

Joyce welcomed everyone.  Guests included Eva Gallegher, Tina Chack’s grandmother who had just celebrated her 95th birthday on April 29th; Barb Coover, Tina Conn’s sister-in-law; Russell Williams, Greg Williams’ dad who will be turning 87 in May; Jim and Coleen McCauley, Barbara McCauley’s son and daughter-in-law, and the Haags – Bill, Charlene and Wayne who have helped at the Washington Green Festival. 

 

Jim Smedley announced the names of all members present and how long they had been members of the TBCBSP.  Life membership card presentations were made.

 

The April minutes, prepared by Heather Watkins, were approved as presented.

 

The April treasurer’s reports were read by Bob and were approved as read.  The society currently has 396 members, which is 23 less than 1 year ago.

 

Joyce Soroka thanked Jim and Gloria for the updated the slide presentation from the society’s 50th Anniversary.  It will also be utilized at PA Welcome Centers during National Tourism Week and SPCBW.

 

Covered Bridge Reports from Members:

 

Bill Haag said that returning from Florida, where he resides during the winter, he saw 9 covered briges in Georgia, and 1 in North Carolina.

 

Michael Chorazy reported that Janis Ford and Pat Hoffmanback have worked tirelessly preparing for the safari.  As with all safaris there will be some challenges, but safety will be of our upmost concern.

 

Steve Wolfhope visited bridges in New York.  He saw 15 bridges, 13 of which were authentic, in the Catskill area and noted that most bridges the wood was natural not painted.

 

Ray Finkelstein corresponded Kris Thompson from PennDot.  Work on Schlichers is coming along but will not be completed until July due to the weather.  Mannassas Guth  construction has not yet begun but bids are slated for December of 2014 or January of 2015 with construction beginning in the spring of 2015.  Rock pre-construction meeting was held and work should be starting shortly.  Dreibelbis Station construction project is at least a year and a half away from beginning.

 

Tim Cohen reported on the severe damage to Rapps Dam.  A tractor trailer driver ignored the height restriction and barreled through it causing all upper support beams to be destroyed.  Charges are pending for that driver.  Also, the following day it received some water damage as the area was pelted with 6” of rain.

 

Pat Cook visited one romantic shelter.

First VP -- Jim Smedley – Calendar was more difficult this year mostly due to lack of photo entries among other factors, but still have as good as previous years.

Third VP -- Tom Walczak

 

No report.  He has delivered the Wooden Covered Span latest edition.   He was contacted by Bill Caswell and the National Society will be holding a meeting on July 27th in Southwestern PA at Wyit Sprowls Covered Bridge.  Tom may lead a mini safari in Washington County after the meeting,

Showed a Special Delivery stamp from the USPS with a covered bridge on it.

Old Business:

 

Joyce gave a safari shirt update.  The shirts were printed without the society emblem on them.  They are adding them, and if you do want them today they will not have the emblem on them.

 

New Business:

 

The nominating committee for the 2014-2015 year is Ray Finkelstein, Bonnie Schultz, and Steve Wolfhope.  They are looking for a few good people.

 

Announcement of Covered Bridge and related events:

 

Greg read the proclamation for See Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges Week. We were unable to do the signing of the proclamation for See Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges Week with Governor Corbett as of this time, but are still attempting to get an appointment with the Governor.

 

 

The SPCBW poster was displayed.  It was designed by Tom Walczak.  Thank you Tom.

 

Members will be setting up displays at the Welcome Centers again for National Tourism Week and SPCBW. 

 

 

The Bucks County Covered bridge Society is planning a 140th anniversary celebration of the building of the original Mood’s Covered bridge in Perkasie.  The event is set for June 7, 2014, 11am  to 2:30 pm at the bridge.  Many Mood family members who are descendants of Samuel Sumstone Mood, the farmer credited by them as the builder of the bridge, are scheduled to be in attendance.  The Country Store will be there.

 

The safari is May 31 to June 1 in Fairfield County, Ohio.  Janis Ford and Pat Hoffmanback are planning a great weekend.  Please plan to join us.

 

August’s meeting will be held at Shearer’s Bridge in Lancaster County, PA.

 

 

Announcement of next meeting date

 

Next month’s meeting will be on Friday, May 30 at 7:00 pm at the safari headquarters.  Joyce will be unable to attend due to driving restrictions so Jim Smedley will preside over the meeting.
